All Saint's day

All Saint's Day in Poland is different because graves are decorated with small lanterns in addition to flowers. These lanterns are made with a colored glass containing a candle, covered with a perforated metal cover to prevent wind from extinguishing it.



Cemetery become then, during one night, melancholy places to visit with one's family. You can buy at the entrance lamps, flowers and other decorations, but also sweets specially made for this occasion (miodzik). Thousands of lanterns are visible and no grave is left without one, even an unknown grave.




At the entrance of one of Krakow cemeteries, one can put a lantern in memory of father Popieluszko, almoner of Solidarnosc, kidnaped and tortured by militia. After a while, all these lanterns form a impressive river .
